“Amygdala Hijack”

Do you know what is happening in this picture?  I am experiencing an Amygdala Hijack!  My amygdala, a tiny almond-shaped structure in my brain is sending a signal to my body to release dopamine and oxytocin, causing me incredible pleasure, happiness, and bonding with my new grandson, Solomon David!  The joy I am experiencing is off the chart!  I’m not worried about my taxes, my high blood pressure, who is going to be our next president, how long has the rice been sitting in the back of the refrigerator, will a snow storm delay our flight home, or how many people will actually read my blog or not.  Joy has given me a moment of respite from the craziness of life.  I am relaxed.  I’m happy.  I’m thankful.

I’m sure there are many reading this blog who would love just a moment of respite from the craziness of life.  So let me ask you a question.  What is it that brings you joy?  Is it a cup of coffee on the back porch?  Maybe it’s 10 minutes with your AirPods, listening to Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell.  Or is it a walk with someone you love, no words shared, just hand and hand?  Whatever it is, take the time and make the effort to experience it.  Give your amygdala something to get excited about.  It has been my experience and it is my belief that it will result in three things:

  1. A feeling of delight and happiness
  2. Increased energy
  3. A heightened sense of community

Sometimes we need a little jumpstart to get the joy juices flowing.  Here are five songs that just may give your amygdala a little bump!

I couldn’t resist sharing just one more thing that brought me joy this week!  I love you, Baby Jane!
