Recently, I was reviewing the history document we give to new board members at David’s Refuge. As I read it again—from the very beginning in 2011 to today—I was overwhelmed with gratitude.
What struck me most wasn’t the growth of the organization, the programs, or even the milestones.
It was the people.
David’s Refuge began as a simple dream Brenda and I had after our son David went to heaven. We imagined a place where parents caring for children with special needs or serious illness could come and rest—to be refreshed, restored, and renewed in their calling as caregivers.
In those early days, we never could have imagined what God would do through so many willing hearts.
As I read through the timeline, name after name appeared—board members, volunteers, staff, hosts, donors, partners, and friends. People who stepped forward to believe in a vision that was bigger than any one person. People who gave their time, their resources, their creativity, and their prayers.
Because of them, what started as a dream in our home has grown into a community serving hundreds of caregivers each year through respite, wellness, and connection.
Every couple who hosted a weekend.
Every volunteer who prepared a room or delivered a care package.
Every donor who chose to invest in weary caregivers.
Every staff member who poured their heart into the mission.
All of them are part of the story.
When people look at David’s Refuge today, it might be easy to see programs, events, and impact numbers. But behind every one of those is a person who said “yes.”
And for that, I am deeply thankful.
David’s Refuge has never belonged to one family or one leader. It is a community, a growing circle of people who believe caregivers should never walk alone.
Looking back reminded me of something important: the story of David’s Refuge is really a story of faithfulness. God’s faithfulness, expressed through the generosity and compassion of His people.
And the most exciting part?
The story is still being written.
