Thinking About David

DAVID PFOHL’S SENIOR PIC

As David’s father, there is no way to fully capture the joy, the strength, and the love our son brought into the world—or the way his life continues to shape it even now.

David was diagnosed with Batten disease at the age of eight. Over the next thirteen years, we watched him slowly lose his ability to walk, talk, see, and eat. But what he never lost—what Batten’s could never touch—was his ability to love and be loved. David had a smile that could light up a room, a laugh that lifted spirits, and a soul that brought people together. He was, in every sense, a gift.

After David passed away in 2009, Brenda and I were heartbroken—but also deeply changed. We knew firsthand how hard the journey of caregiving can be: the physical and emotional toll, the loneliness, the need for rest. And we also knew the incredible power of community, faith, and hope. Out of David’s life—and his legacy—David’s Refuge was born.

People often call David “the heart behind the mission,” and it’s true. Every family who walks through the doors of David’s Refuge carries their own story, their own struggle. But through David’s example, we’ve been able to offer something we all need—a place to rest, to be reminded you’re not alone, and to know you are loved.

David taught us that everyone deserves to be seen and valued, regardless of their abilities. He showed us that joy can exist in suffering, and that love—real, deep, abiding love—can change the world.

Today, David’s Refuge is his legacy. And every time a weary parent finds peace, every time a caregiver hears “you matter,” we see our son’s life continuing to shine.

Thank you, David. You were, and always will be, our greatest teacher.

With love,
Warren Pfohl
